The declaration of rights, ratified by William of orange in 1351 states that No free man shall be arrested, or imprisoned, or deprived of his property, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any way destroyed, nor shall we go against him or send against him, unless by legal judgment of his peers. What this means in practice is that every ‘fixed penalty’ every parking fine is illegal. Does the government worry about such minor matters? Not a bit of it. When Sales tax (the forerunner of VAT) was first brought in a shopkeeper whose name I can not track down took the government to court on the grounds that contrary to the Magna Carta he was being instructed to set himself up as a tax collector. The government did not even try to mount a legal defense, just threw him out of court. If you are stopped by a speed camera you can expect a letter through the post asking who was driving the car (because speed cameras take photos from the back) and if you decline to answer then you get fined and points on your licence. What ever happened to innocent until proved guilty or reasonable doubt? You incriminate yourself or you get prosecuted.
I am not an anarchist or an anti-capitalist. All I am saying is that laws should be just, they should reflect the will of the people and they should apply to all. If I am elected I will not get the chance to change or repeal any laws (nor would any other MP other than the prime minister) but I can do my damndest to stop the government getting away with murder. I can stand up and be counted every time they try to take a little more of our so called liberty away and given half a chance I will try to put some of it back
