The alternatives

one lawNew Labour

I am not joking or exaggerating, they sicken me. Blair was the worst of them, dragging us into an illegal war simply because had his nose so far up the Bush’s ring he could no longer speak with his own voice. Brown’s ‘prudent stewardship’ of the economy is looking more and more dubious. After more than ten years in power we still have kids leaving school that can barely read and write. Those that manage and go on to university leave with huge debts, we have more people in prison than just about any other country in the world (and I am not against prison). The gap between rich and poor is getting bigger and the country is pretty much bankrupt. Great work.

Liberal Democrats.

The main problem with the Liberal democrats in my view is that they are just not angry enough. Whilst I do not agree with it, I had some time for their published policy to put a penny on the pound in income tax to improve education. The trouble is that the liberals are the most left wing 'major' party left and left wing, 'child centred', politically correct, noncompetitive, wrap them in cotton wool, educational policies are most of the problem. At least they were honest though. Then they scrapped the policy. To their credit they did not support the war in Iraq but they were politely disagreeing, I would have been mounting legal challenges, hounding Blair and bringing up the question at every opportunity. Like most other people I was amazed when I saw Nick Clegg on the news saying that the old age pension was £30 and realised that he was not living on the same planet as the rest of us. They appear to be rethinking their plans for a local income tax. As I have said, they long ago abandoned their pledge to increase income tax to improve education. Their policies and pledges seem more fluid now than ever before and it is hard to see what they stand for any more.

Conservatives

I can sort of understand Blair leading Labour into Iraq, no doubt he was offered one hell of a sweetener by Bush. I cannot for the life of me, however, see why the Conservatives went with him. Hardly anyone in the country wanted this. Those that did, did so simply because they believed what turned out to be the lies of weapons of mass destruction. It is the job of the opposition to call the government to account and if a party has shown itself unfit for opposition then there is no reason to suppose that they will be fit for government. Add to that the fact that I do not believe that the residents of Esher and Walton are particularly well served by the current Tory incumbent and the case for a new MP is looking pretty strong.
